Does even the mention of the word Google Analytics make you feel slightly confused and nauseous?
Dont worry, that’s normal, but you need to put your feelings to one side and read on, because if you are running a business web site and you aren’t using it, then you should be, and I’m going to explain it without messing with your head.
1. WHAT IS ANALYTICS?
It is a completely free program that is used for measuring visitors (traffic) to your web site.
2. DO I NEED IT?
If you have a blog or a website, you can make good use of Google Analytics irrespective of whether you are using it for professional or personal use. It doesn’t matter what sort of website you have, everyone can use Google Analytics.
3. HOW CAN IT HELP ME?
Web site traffic (your visitors) is the lifeline of every website and this is where installing Google Analytics can make a huge difference.
4. WHERE DO I GET IT?
You can sign up for a free account at analytics.google.com which will give you a tracking code which you have to add to your web site. If you are using WordPress there are lots of plugins which will help you.
HOW CAN IT HELP YOU?
Analytics helps you analyse your visitor traffic and paint a picture of your audience and their needs, track the routes people take to reach you and the devices they use to get there.
You can learn what people are looking for, what they like and then tailor your marketing and site content for maximum impact. Analytics will give you the answers to lots of questions like…
- How many people are visiting my site?
- What are my most popular posts and pages?
- Which digital marketing strategies are attracting the most visits?
WHAT DOES GOOGLE ANALYTICS ACTUALLY TELL ME?
It tells you the WHO, WHERE and WHAT of your web site.
1. WHO is visiting – this is called AUDIENCE
2. WHERE did they come from – this is called ACQUISITION
3. WHAT did they do when they got there – this is called BEHAVIOUR
If you aren’t using it they you are missing a trick, because it’s free, and on a basic level its simple to understand. Working without it you are in the dark.
